Download Windows 8

Table of Contents

Support for Windows 8 has ended, and Microsoft no longer offers a direct download for it. To get a copy of Windows 8.1, which was a free upgrade for Windows 8 users, you will need to find it from a third-party source. A popular option is the Internet Archive, which hosts older software but is not endorsed by Microsoft.

Critical warnings
  • Security risks: Windows 8.1 is no longer supported with official security updates, which makes your system vulnerable to viruses, malware, and other security threats.
  • Unsupported software: Many modern applications and hardware drivers may not be compatible with Windows 8.1.
  • Verify downloads: When using third-party sources like the Internet Archive, it is essential to verify the download to ensure its integrity and that it has not been tampered with.

How to download Windows 8.1 from the Internet Archive
  1. Navigate to the Internet Archive's download page for Windows 8.1.
  2. Select and download the .ISO file for the version you need (e.g., Windows 8.1 English 64-bit).
  3. Because the file comes from a third party, it is highly recommended to check the downloaded ISO's checksums to verify its authenticity.
How to create a bootable USB drive
  1. Get Rufus: Download and install Rufus, a free utility for creating bootable USB drives.
  2. Prepare the USB: Insert a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage into your computer.
  3. Launch Rufus: Open the Rufus application.
  4. Select your ISO: Use Rufus to select your USB drive and browse for the Windows 8.1 ISO file you downloaded.
  5. Configure settings: Choose the appropriate partition scheme and target system settings for your PC. Use GPT for modern PCs with UEFI or MBR for older computers with BIOS.
  6. Create the drive: Click "Start" and confirm that you want to format the USB drive. This will erase all data on the drive.
How to install Windows 8.1
  1. Boot from USB: Restart your computer and press the boot menu key (often F12) or enter your BIOS to change the boot order and start from the USB drive.
  2. Follow the wizard: The Windows setup files will load, and a wizard will guide you through the installation.
  3. Enter product key (optional): If prompted for a product key, you can either enter one or skip the step by creating a simple text file called EI.cfg in the "sources" folder on your USB drive.
  4. Complete setup: Follow the on-screen instructions to select your language, choose a custom install, create a new partition, and finalize the installation process.
